The Ecology of Crusading

The international und interdisciplinary programme of the European Research Council (ERC) focuses on the environmental impact of conquest, colonization and religious conversion in the medieval Baltic. Next to the principal investigator Aleksander Pluskowski, PhD, who is based at Reading University, the programme includes archaeologists, archaeozoologists, archaeobotanists and geoarchaeologists as well as representatives from related disziplines from various countries such as Poland, the UK, Latvia, Estonia and the US. I am working on the written sources for Prussia, which are mainly castle inventories. A first team meeting took place in December 2010, hosted by the Archaeological Institute of the Nicolaus Copernicus University at Toruń, the final conference in September 2014 at Riga and Cēsis in Latvia. Two volumes with the results of the project will be published in 2015 (project website).
